Matthew Long

Matthew Long is a junior at Classical Academy in Colorado Springs and since he was younger, has always loved using photography, painting and video to construct stories. For his YDA project, Matthew chose to document his grandfather, Roy, who spent his career as a Navy chaplain. Using archival footage dating back to the 1970s, and interviews with family, ROY is a poignant portrait of a life lived in service to his community. Roy’s recent diagnosis of metastatic cancer raises the larger questions of how we measure a fully engaged life and how family and community become the embodiment of our values and love.
